*16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence*

The Assembly of Women in the MDC Alliance external province (North America Province) will be hosting their official commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence on the 4th of December 2021.

This campaign was organized by the Assembly to raise awareness of issues related to violence against Zimbabwean women and girls. This year, each of the 16 days has been set aside to tackle specific issues faced by women which include femicide, child marriages, and disability based violence. The event will be attended virtually and the global theme for this year is “Orange the world: End violence against women now!”

The event will be graced by MDC Alliance Member of Parliament, Honorable Joana Mamombe, who was abducted and tortured by ZANU-PF state agents. The Executive Director of Phumulani Minnesota African Women Against Violence, Comfort Dondo, is also expected to speak at the event. National MDC Alliance leaders, Hon. Machirairwa Mugidho a victim of GBV, legislator and National Chairlady of the Assembly of Women will also address the audience.Vice President Lynnette Karenyi-Kore, a legislator and also a victim of GBV will be the guest of honor. Worldwide, at least one in every three women, an estimated 736 million women, have experienced some form of gender based violence. This figure is not inclusive of sexual harassment. These acts of violence affect women more in low income countries. In Zimbabwe, about 1 in 4 women have experienced sexual violence. This program aims to bring awareness in an effort to afford all Zimbabwean women basic human rights and encourage the Zimbabwean society as a whole to work towards this goal.
