Inspiring Women: Portrait Photography Workshop

During the 16 Days of Activism 2019, get involved and get inspired – create a portrait of an inspiring woman, and have a chance to win!

The 16 Days of Activism for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is a worldwide campaign to end violence against women, spearheaded by women’s organisations and the UN, from the 25th November to 10th December. Learn more about the 16 Days.

This is the second in a series of events and workshops Cardiff Women’s Aid are running to promote participation in the #16DaysOfActivism through creative competitions. Find our other events here. Check out our other competitions on Facebook or Instagram.

We want you to create a portrait of a woman that you find inspiring. You can use any medium to create your portrait, including photography, drawing, painting – if you can create it, you can enter it.

The woman in your portrait can be anyone that you find inspiring. It can be someone you know personally like your mother or a friend, it can be someone famous, or even yourself! Sometimes you are the most inspiring person you know!

To enter, send your design to (a scan or photo is fine – the winner will be contacted to arrange final details), along with a few sentences about why you find the woman you have chosen so inspiring. The competition closes 6th December 2019, and the winner will be announced on 10th December – the final day of the 16 days.

The winning portrait will be printed, framed and given a special place on the wall of our Women’s Centre for everyone to admire and gather some inspiration from.

Being given a blank slate can be incredibly daunting – where on earth to start?! That’s why we’re putting on a workshop to help you develop your portrait photography skills. During the workshop, we will explore composition, background, technique and approach. We will practice taking portraits of each other, and if the weather allows, we’ll take it outside to explore different lights and backgrounds. All you need to bring is a camera (your phone will do fine!)

No artistic skill is needed (honestly!) – anyone can enter and join in with other women who are interested in women’s rights and empowerment. Tell a friend, bring a friend, make a friend!

Please note that spaces are very limited, so please only sign up for a ticket if you fully intend to come along – however, bringing a friend or family member is very much encouraged, as long as they sign up for a space! If you can no longer make it, please let us know so we can reallocate your space.
