Fighting Violence Against Women in Politics: the Limits of Legal Reform

In 2016, Jo Cox was fatally shot and stabbed multiple times during her term as British Labour Member of Parliament. This is just one of many cases across the world in which women in politics are targeted through assassination attempts, abuse, and threats. Through an international lens, the Global Observatory’ report, published by the International Peace Institute (IPI), identifies the types of risks women in politics face, the slow progression of reform criminalizing political harassment, and the drawbacks to enforcement mechanisms.
